Did Robin Wray Make It Into Firefighting School?

Robin Wray and Nick Field

It was 1998 and I’m sitting on the phone with Robin.

“Nick, I know what I want to do.”
“Oh cool, tell me.”
“No, you’re going to laugh”
“I won’t laugh”
“No, I’m not going to tell you”
“I honestly won’t dude. It’s cool. Tell me what you want to do”
“Promise me you won’t laugh”
“Dude, I promise I won’t laugh, it’s cool, just tell me”
“Well, okay, I…, no I can’t. You’ll laugh”
“Dude, just tell me! I will not laugh at you.”
“Okay… Don’t laugh… I want to be a firefighter.
“AAHHH HAH

HAHHAHAhhahahha ahahaahahhahah hahahahahhahaha hahahhahaha hahahha
- 6 minutes later -
ahahaha hahhahaha hahahaha oh. Damn, sorry dude. Hello? Hello?”

Robin, was pissed. He didn’t talk to me for days. I’ve never laughed so long at a single sentence.

Fast forward to today. Robin, still one of my best friends, has been nervously waiting for the interview with the admissions of the best firefighting program in Canada at Humber college. Six months ago, Robin, had not attended high school since dropping out. Today, he now has his high school diploma, and has been studying his narrow rear for the entrance exam and today he had his interview. He’s been saying how this is the biggest approaching day of his life.

This interview is very important. It makes or breaks his future. Out of 500 applicants only 36 are admitted.

He called me up just after his interview. He aced it and was accepted on the spot. The recruiter said he was one of the strongest candidates he’s seen in his entire career and his parents should be proud. I’m proud of him too. He came by and joined me for a beer and we had a short, modest, little celebration. He sure showed me! Congratulations to Robin Wray. He kicks butt!

Macbook Power Adapater Tear - Covered Under Warranty?

Apple Broken Cord

Apple doesn’t generally screw up or break, but on occasion it does.  I’ve had my black macbook for about 21 months at this point. The thing works like a charm and it has travelled the planet with me. I was working away today, (actually I was lying on the floor of my office with my laptop on top of me) when I lost power and my computer switched to battery. That’s odd. I noticed after a few seconds that my power cord was ripping near the magnetic plug.  I immediately head over to the mall to get it fixed.

I didn’t want to pay for this. I did not do anything wrong, or rough to it, and I have Apple Care (Apple’s extended warranty). I went inside, the staff asked me what they can do for me, I told them, “my computer cord is torn, and my computer is my livelyhood”, she took a look at it, and said “Is it torn or burnt? Burnt is covered under warranty, but torn isn’t, that’d be considered wear and tear from general use”. I told her I really didn’t know and she said, it really didn’t matter, and she directed me to someone who replaced it right then and there. They didn’t ask me for my name. They didn’t take my serial number, they just opened a box and replaced it.

Thanks Apple :)

Blog World Expo

Nick Looking Nerdy Going To Blog World Expo

This is geeky, but I’ll be heading to Las Vegas for the Blog World Expo. It’s essentially the only convention for bloggers out there. Since I’m going to be starting a few sites, it’d be prudent for me to go.

How to Detox - Sober September

Drinking

At least once a year it’s important to cut some of the substances in your life. Most people in the western world drink very regularly, especially young adults. Sober September is a guide on how to cut most substances from your life for one month. There is always excuses to drink, or smoke, or eat unhealthily, but sometimes it just takes some self discipline. Typically, rather than choosing September to cut substance out, I chose November. The weather is bad, it’s not the month of my birthday, and there’s nothing really exciting about November. This year, however, I personally am making some big changes in my life, and September is a good month for me. I’d encourage you to do the same.

Why?
The first reason is health! A month may seem like a long time to cut out substances, but really, it’s only 1/12 of the year. By doing this every year, it’s nothing on the larger picture. Another reason to cut substances, like alcohol, is to keep your tolerance in check. If you drink every day, then cut out alcohol for 30 days, then your next drink will significantly intoxicate you more-so than before.

What to cut?
Everyone has different things they’d like to cut from their lives. Here’s a list of substances to cut.

  • - Alcohol
  • - Cigarettes and nicotine
  • - Illicit Drugs
  • - Marijuana
  • - Caffeine
  • - Over the counter drugs
  • - Refined sugar
  • - Red Meat
  • - Deep Fried Foods

When to start?
The second that midnight strikes on the first of the Month. (I suggest September). It doesn’t matter if you are at a party on August 31st and it’s really only starting to pick up at 11:30pm. You MUST quit at midnight. The reason being, is because that’s the type of discipline you NEED to have if you’re going to get through it. By waiting until you wake up the next day, you’ve already cheated yourself. You have to quit at midnight. No ifs, ands, or buts.

When to finish?
Midnight on the first of the month. I’m not suggesting that by taking a month off, you should go back to your old ways of substance consumption, but there being a clear, distinct, light at the end of the tunnel, or month, makes everything far easier to get through. Setting specific dates is a clear display of whether or not you have the discipline and control over your own life. If you decide to do it, but can’t, what does that say? Remember, it’s just 1 month.

How to begin?

  • - Light up your last cigarette, and pound your last beer at 11:54pm. Once that cigarette is out, it’s out!
  • - Think of ways to occupy the time you’d normally spend drinking, or smoking. Take up yoga or something. Nobody cares, what you decide to do, but you may as well be productive.
  • - Find a digestive detox program and start it. There are tonnes of digestive detox programs you can do, I googled this one that I personally may give a go. Dr. Elson Hass: Detoxification and the Detox Diet

If you have any suggestions, on other ways to detox, please write them in the comments. Enjoy September, let’s party come October!
