Gold Coast, Australia

Yes, it has been a while, I apologize.

Laura and I have gone up the East Coast from Sydney, to just below Brisbane to a place called Surfer’s Paradise. We stayed at a resort in Main Beach (half hour walk North of Surfer’s Paradise), but we can’t afford to stay at a resort for a long period of time. We were looking for a place to settle down for a few weeks. I want a place where I can surf, and Laura likes the beach too. If you go too far north, there are too many dangerous species off the beach, so swimming isn’t an option. We decided that Byron Bay was a good place to stay, but when we started looking for accommodation and work in Byron Bay, we weren’t greeted with many options. We returned to Surfer’s though, there’s plenty of work here.

You can imagine why we’d want to stay in Byron Bay

Byron Bay

Surfer’s Paradise is on the Gold Coast, which is one giant beach that extends for about 35km, it includes tonnes of little towns and it’s the most aggressively developed part of Australia. It’s delivery of constant commercial stimulus is quite overwhelming. There are lots of high rises and shops. It’s located in the state of Queensland, just below Brisbane.

While we were in Byron Bay I got drunk and sprained my ankle. After we returned to find accommodation in Surfer’s, my friend Lindsey visited us for a few days. After that, we moved in with these two other Canadian girls (Lauren and Brianna) to a little apartment in the heart of the action at Surfer’s.

As we were looking for work, I was walking down the street when I hear someone yell my name. I turn around and it’s this French dude (fucking French!) that I knew from Manly. He pulls the car over and he’s with this farmer who invites Laura and I to work on his farm for a week painting his fence. He’ll feed and house us for free and pay us $100 cash a day. We said we were cool for that. But the day we were supposed to start, I got very sick. My throat infection lasted a week and I was in bed for the most part, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to work, so I forced myself to go to this guys farm and work. Another bonus is the farmer said he’d take us deep sea fishing when he had a chance. That sounded good to us! It hasn’t happened yet, but we did the work and it was fun.

We’re going to stay in Surfer’s Paradise for a few weeks and make a few bucks. I have a couple door to door knocking and selling jobs that I have lined up.

Talk to ya soon.
